I think the one of the most iconic sounds in science fiction is the infamous boom-boom yep I'm talking about the Star Wars blaster these kinds of sounds that are added to a film are called Foley sounds and today we're going to try and recreate the sounds of a Star Wars blaster Ben Burtt has been the sound designer for the entire Star Wars saga since 1977 the story goes the Bert was out on a hike when he walked underneath the guy wires of a radio tower when he hit the wires with a metal spanner it made a distinctive noise which became the sound of the blaster we've attached a microphone to this metal slinky and if I hit it with a knife totally sounds like a blaster and if you don't have a knife handy you can always use the forks sound is a vibration that travels through a medium in this case the vibration created by the knife travels through the slinky until it reaches the microphone as the slinky compresses vibration travels as a mechanical wave along it slack a longitudinal wave it's easy to try this at home – all you need is a plastic cup to act as an amplifier for the sound sound waves travel at different speeds through different materials the speed of sound in air is 343 meters per second that sounds pretty fast but the speed of sound in water is 1433 meters per second this is because the molecules in liquid are much closer together than the molecules in a gas this means it takes less time for them to bump into one another when they vibrate so the sound wave travels faster the same is true between a liquid and a solid the speed of sound in our steel slinky is 6100 meters per second so we've got our sounds all we need to do is add a few more special effects and got our very own blasters if you enjoyed this video hit the like button share it around and click on my slinky to subscribe for more Star Wars science check out how to make a lightsaber and don't forget to share your pictures with us on Facebook and Twitter thanks for watching and they thing right
